Key Scriptures: Hebrews 10:1-11

Facilitator Questions:
Themes:  Sin, death, atonement, forgiveness, fear of the LORD
Start thinking: Ask a question to get your group thinking.
  • Discuss sin. What is it? What causes it? What are its effects? How is it so offensive to God that everyone who sins deserves to die?
  • Read verses 1-4 and 11. During the Old Testament, why did God require the priests to make daily sacrifices that were never enough to take away sins? How would this affect their entire outlook and ministry?
  • Read verses 5-10. How did Jesus’ sacrifice make total forgiveness rather than temporary atonement for sin possible?
  • Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” How does this verse relate to Hebrews 10?
Start sharing:  Choose a question to create openness.
  • What is Hebrews 10 teaching you about sin being literally a matter of life and death?
  • Proverbs 14:27 says, “The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.” Proverbs 8:13 says, “The fear of the LORD is to hate evil.” What is your concept of the fear of the LORD? In what ways do you fear the LORD?
  • Do you sometimes sin casually because you know Jesus will forgive you? What does that tell you about the condition of your heart?
  • What strikes you most about Jesus’ total obedience to the Father’s will in sacrificing his life for our sin?
Start praying:  Be bold and pray with power.
  • Praise God for His holiness, goodness, love, righteousness, judgment and mercy.
  • Praise and thank Jesus, the Lamb of God, for taking away the sins of the world and for redeeming you.
  • Confess and repent of anything in your heart that indulges sin or presumptuously takes advantage of Jesus’ forgiveness.
  • Pray for grace to properly worship and fear the LORD.
  • Pray that the Church will be purified of sin and will grow in holiness.
Start doing:  Commit to a step and live it out this week.
  • Do a Bible study on “the fear of the LORD”.
  • Memorize Romans 6:23.
  • Pray every day to know Jesus more deeply and understand the depth of His suffering for us.
